Product Questions

Answers to frequently asked questions about how PlumBuddy works, what is included, and general product capabilities.

How Does PlumBuddy Work?

PlumBuddy installs on your main water line and uses ultrasonic flow sensors to continuously monitor water usage. When it detects unusual flow patterns that indicate a leak, it automatically shuts off your water supply to prevent damage. You can also control the valve remotely through the mobile app to turn your water on or off from anywhere, giving you peace of mind whether you are home or away.

Can I Remotely Turn My Water On and Off?

Yes. PlumBuddy allows you to remotely control your water valve through the mobile app from anywhere with an internet connection. You can manually turn your water supply on or off whenever needed, in addition to the automatic shutoff feature that activates when leaks are detected.

Does PlumBuddy Work Without Internet?

The PlumBuddy Valve has built-in leak detection that operates locally on the device. If your internet goes down, the valve retains its current mode settings and continues monitoring water flow. You will not receive push notifications during an outage, but the valve’s automatic shutoff will still function based on its programmed thresholds.

What Is Included When I Buy a PlumBuddy Valve?

Each PlumBuddy Valve comes with:

  • (1) PlumBuddy Motorized Water Shut-Off Valve
  • (1) USB-C Power Cable (10 feet)
  • (1) USB-C Power Adapter
  • (1) 3.6V D Battery (backup power)

Pipe fittings and adapters are not included because every home’s plumbing is different. Your plumber will bring the appropriate fittings for your installation.

Does the Valve Need a Plumber to Install?

Yes. The PlumBuddy Valve requires professional installation by a licensed plumber. This is a requirement for maintaining your warranty. The plumber will cut into your main water line, install the valve with appropriate fittings, and verify the installation is leak-free. Installation typically takes 1-2 hours.

PlumAssist pucks are DIY installations that do not require a plumber. PlumSense extension cables simply plug into a PlumAssist puck.

Does PlumBuddy Track Water Usage?

Yes. The PlumBuddy app shows water usage data in daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly views. You can see how much water your household uses, identify trends, and compare usage across different time periods. Note that usage data may take up to an hour to appear in the app after water is used.

Can PlumBuddy Detect Small Leaks?

PlumBuddy detects leaks based on water flow that exceeds your configured threshold for longer than your set timer. For very small leaks (like a slowly dripping faucet), the flow rate may be below your threshold and would not trigger automatic shutoff. However, PlumAssist pucks can detect even tiny amounts of water at the point of the leak through direct contact sensing. Adding a PlumSense extension cable to a PlumAssist puck expands the detection area even further.

For the most comprehensive protection, pair a PlumBuddy Valve with PlumAssist pucks at high-risk locations throughout your home.

Does PlumBuddy Detect Water Pressure?

PlumBuddy monitors water flow rate through ultrasonic sensors. The system does not include a dedicated pressure sensor. Flow rate monitoring is effective for detecting leaks, burst pipes, and unusual water usage patterns.

Will PlumBuddy Shut Off My Sprinklers?

PlumBuddy is designed for indoor plumbing protection. If your irrigation system shares the same water main as your indoor plumbing, your plumber should install the valve downstream of the irrigation branch so sprinklers are not affected. See our compatibility guide for detailed installation guidance.

Can I Use PlumBuddy in an Apartment or Condo?

It depends on the installation type:

  • PlumBuddy Valve: Requires access to the main water supply line and permission from your building management. May not be practical in all multi-unit buildings.
  • PlumAssist: Ideal for apartments and condos. Place the battery-powered puck anywhere water damage is a risk — under sinks, near water heaters, or behind appliances. No plumbing modification needed. Easy to take with you when you move.
  • PlumSense: An extension cable that plugs into a PlumAssist puck for expanded detection coverage. Useful if you want to cover a wider area around pipes or appliances.

Does PlumBuddy Make a Gas Shutoff Valve?

No. PlumBuddy specializes in water line protection only. We do not currently offer gas line shutoff products.

Can Multiple People Use the Same PlumBuddy Account?

Yes. Multiple users can be added to the same PlumBuddy account. All users on the account receive the same alerts and can control the valve through the app. This is useful for families or property managers who need multiple people to have access.
